TIP OF THE MONTH!

Shards of glass litter inside empty display cases.  The door to the vault is wide open, revealing empty shelves.  One gold bracelet lies on the floor, partially swallowed from the of the jeweler who minutes before took his last breath.  Police are in hot pursuit of the thief as he climbs a fence to escape.  Police takes aim and guns him down.  

The bandit awakens at the foothills of a majestic palace.  He knows he is dead.  He is met by a genteel, portly, grand-fatherly man dressed in a crisp white suit.  “Welcome Mr. Valentine.  My name is Chester.  I am your servant.  I am here to grant you anything you wish.”  “Oh yeah... anything, fats?”  “Anything!”  “Okay, how about a million bucks?”  “Yes, of course.”  In a moment, one million dollars appear on a table.  “Oh, my God!, I can’t believe I ended up here!” as the bandit shoves wads of hundreds into his pockets.  “Well, how about some clothes…wait!...only the finest.  English-made.  Expensive!”  “Why, of course.  Come with me.”  There, the servant opens an ornate, highly polished mahogany door, that led  to a large wardrobe, and  revealed the most exquisitely tailored clothing, made from the finest fabrics.  Overjoyed, the bandit eagerly pulls an ostrich skin  jacket off a hanger, puts it on, and basked in how wonderful he felt.  “Well, how about some babes.  I want two.  Ms. America types.  Beautiful!--hair, nails, figure...the works!!...as if they were fresh from the stage!”  “Yes, of course.”   In a moment, two  stunning, and beautifully dressed ladies stepped into the room.  “Oh, my good lord, you are here for me?!  I have never been with such beautiful ladies!  Girls, let’s hit the town!

The trio paints the town red.  They went to the finest restaurant.  Dined on the most delectable dishes.  Drank the finest wines.  They then attended a  moving concert.  They capped off the evening in a casino, where they won every game, every hand.  They did not have enough hands  to carry home the piles of cash. The bandit couldn’t believe his good fortune, and exclaimed he wanted more.

The next day, two different ladies, more beautiful than the previous  two,  walked  into  the room to escort the bandit .  He was overjoyed.  Again, he had the time of his life.  The day after that, two different ladies appeared.  They painted the town red,  and once again, he was on cloud nine.  After the eighth day,  the bandit is slumped over a granite counter.  Two more gorgeous ladies, more beautiful than any of the previous ones,  walked into the room to escort him.  He looks at them as if he would throw up, and motions them away.  Moments Later Chester walks in and says: “Why Mr. Valentine, why are you so sad.  I have given you everything you have wanted.  I can give you more.  What would you like?”  “That is just the thing!  Everything I want I get.  I eat the best foods everyday.  I have money up my ass.  I go gambling.  I win at every turn.  I try to lose.  I win anyway!  I with the most beautiful women every night.  I never thought I would get tired of women. This story illustrates that in life, it is the journey and not necessarily the  destination  which holds the meaning.  It seems that is what brings  joy.  Set up the goal, and set out to achieve it, overcoming low character, and staying on the path of discipline to achieve it. Yes, we  want to win, and accomplish our  goals,  but what makes the win sweet, lies in the struggle, and the agony to achieve them.  So, while life is suffering, the joy and point of it  lies in the overcoming...to be better than we were yesterday.  To fall on our butts, but find the strength, and make the choice to stand up and keep moving.  It is to overcome our darker impulses and to control our thoughts and thereby our behavior.  We may think life will begin once we  land that dream job, or have a beautiful woman,  or fancy house, or a fast car or acceptance to an elite circle of people, etc. When we win all the time, without earning it from the struggle, it may indeed feel like hell.  So, could it be that the  joy of life lies in the struggle to overcome adversity?!

Remember, everything you hold dear right now, you will one day leave behind, including your one precious body.  So the joy of life is who we become as a result of taking on the struggles, the challenges of life and becoming better for it.  Even if we lose–and we will, often–we apply the lessons and  move forward.  Human beings are built for challenge. We are built for the struggle.  That is how we grow. That is how we have survived all these millennia.  Just as muscles atrophy without use and taxation, so does the spirit.  So, set your goals high.  Break them down into manageable pieces.  Learn from every mistake.  And apply the lessons.  Remember, failure is never a reflection of your self worth.  Failure is simply feedback that whatever you have done has not worked out.  So tweak it…add something…take away something…and sometimes, you may have to abandon it all together and go a different direction.  So fight the good fight, and become better for it!
