If a pre-booked engagement is canceled with less than 12 hours notice for anything less than a genuine emergency, a fair gratuity is expected.
Failure to do so suggests to me that you don't value me or my time and will influence my willingness to schedule with you in the future.
Of course I have no way of knowing whether your cancellation is in fact unavoidable. But you'll know. Potentially being dishonest about it something so fundamental says more about you as a person than I ever could.
